Supply Chain Strengths
A supply chain’s strength is assessed when the product or service meets the customer’s requirements. Only when this system breaks down are the issues classified as a weakness. Therefore, the question remains – what is the strength of the supply chain?
The people, technology, processes and activities necessary to move products from their origin to customers require a healthy supply chain system. Many intricate elements and complexity are involved in the logistics component of supply chain management. Quality, quantity, time frame and location expectations must also be met.
However, when a supply chain is stripped back, it is possible to see, at its core, a simple idea involving getting products and services into customers’ hands quickly and correctly. To test whether this strength meets the needs of the supply chain, it would be prudent to test the strengths of the supply chain.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) are developed to identify, measure and track the performance of the supply chain. These allow for identifying areas that perform efficiently and areas that need improvement. KPIs are generally customised to develop a company’s goals and objectives and may include:
- Supply chain reliability;
- Supply chain responsiveness;
- Supply chain flexibility;
- Supply chain costs.
KPIs are necessary, and they let companies examine measures related to the supply chain. First, it will go over those in light of how the organisation employs certain KPIs to assess its performance and the performance of an activity in which it is involved. Second, determining the appropriate KPIs requires knowing what matters most to the company. Thirdly, implementing a thorough and equitable methodology or structure for gauging key performance indicators; finally, after establishing the points above, gaining a solid grasp of how one’s performance compares to rivals and businesses from other sectors but with comparable supply chain profiles. This allows one to ascertain the performance of the comparative supply chains and, more crucially, the business procedures that account for these businesses’ success and attainment of industry best practices.
