The Team Leader’s Role in the Development of the Team Members

John Adair claimed that the ability of a leader to be effective is dependent upon satisfying three fundamental needs.  The effective team leader will have control over these three areas and will dedicate their time equally between:

  1. Satisfying task needs – a clear definition of the task at the outset will clarify priorities for the whole team and individual members. Allocation of resources and establishment of responsibilities and accountability will help the team and individuals focus.
  2. Satisfying team needs – anticipation of group conflict, struggle or disagreements and actions for remedy along with ongoing encouragement will result in a cohesive group.  The individuals in the team will understand their contribution to the task and the overall success of achieving the outcome.
  3. Developing individual needs – the team leader needs to develop an understanding of the team members as individuals (including personality, skills, strengths and needs).  Assisting and supporting individuals with their plans, problems and challenges will benefit the team, the task and the person.  Recognising individual performance and good work will have a positive effect on the team member and task achievement.  Investing time in training and developing team members could be used to demonstrate the value of that team member’s contribution to the organisation.
