JLR and other Automotive manufacturers use backward scheduling due to the complexity of the end product.
Customers can order hundreds of variations of a vehicle therefore the order needs to be placed before production scheduling can start.
From order placement calculating all the production processes customers’ are given an estimated delivery date.
The vehicle BoM will be specific to a customer order, with each component having varying order lead-times that have to be sequenced on the production line to build the customer’s vehicle specification.
Each part of the production process has to be planned exactly, as vehicles move down the production line all the required components are sequenced to be fitted at the right time to the right vehicle.
The customer will then receive their exact vehicle specification, for example a Jaguar XF Diesel in metallic blue, with black leather seats and alloy wheels.
