Order processing is a core responsibility of the Logistics department and the use of advanced technology has improved this activity in two ways:
- Computerised inventory management systems have improved the provision of delivery dates to the customer because it is easier to determine if products can be supplied from inventory or if they have to be manufactured.
- By checking inventory system and linking directly with supplier IT systems via EDI, it is possible to automate order placing.
- EDI allows customers to track orders through the supply chain process.
