In reality, to take advantage of the strengths of certain transport modes and to avoid the weaknesses of other transport modes, it is often necessary to deploy multiple modes of transport. Multimodal logistics involves combination of different modes of transportation such as rail, road and sea to cost-effectively manage shipments from start-to-end, ensuring optimum care and efficiency for each leg of the journey.
