This is the simplest Kanban, or signal. A square is painted on the floor between two sequential operations – Op 1 and Op 2.
Op 1 – the feeder operation, fills the square with completed work;
Op 2 pulls material from the square;
When the square is full, Op 1 stops producing – because Op 2 has enough material to keep working;
An empty square signals Op 1 to start producing; and
Two or more squares between operations allows the system to be fine-tuned so Op 2 never runs out of work.
