There are various methods of communication in the workplace:
Verbal Communication
Verbal communication is essential for a business to operate effectively, not least because it facilitates the formation of interpersonal relationships .
Face To Face Communication
A significant amount of verbal communication in business is in face to face format in situations like meetings, conferences and briefings. They can be a one on one meeting giving, or receiving a brief, a formal work appraisal for an individual or it may be to numerous people in the form of a debate, meeting or presentation.
Telephone Communication
This involves communicating by phone. This can be either one on one or by using a teleconferencing facility. Teleconferencing is an effective way of conducting a meeting with multiple persons who are unable to physically attend a meeting. It is also an effective way of saving on business travel time and costs within an organisation. It can also be quicker to organise than a face-to face meeting.
Video Conferencing
Video conferencing has similar benefits to teleconferencing in that participants do not need to travel in order to take part in the meeting. A video conference allows individuals to see people through a TV screen or computer monitor.
Non-Verbal Communication
Non-verbal communication relates to actions, gestures, and other types of physical appearance when combined with facial expressions can be a powerful means of transmitting messages.
A mixed message can occur when a person’s words communicate one message, while non-verbally, he or she is communicating something else. Being able to read non-verbal communication can be particularly important during negotiations with supplier or customers.
